Here, we look into Walmart’s and Target’s planned retail construction pipelines and highlight some notable planned and ongoing projects for each of the two superstores.
Chances are that no matter where you live, you’ve got a Walmart and a Target. Go ahead, Google “Walmart near me” or “Target near me,” and check for yourself. If not one near you, it feels more likely that there are two than none. Even so, we looked into planned Walmart and Target construction, and it turns out that both companies have a number of projects in the pipeline. Take a look at what we found.
Texas has nearly three times more planned Walmart construction than any other state, and a third of those projects are concentrated in Dallas alone. Meanwhile, Target’s planned construction is spread across the U.S, with a split between new and renovation projects.
Importantly, the majority of planned and ongoing construction for both Target and Walmart involves renovation or expansion as opposed to the construction of an entirely new store. That said, new Walmarts and Targets are springing up everywhere, but they’re accumulating in some places more than they are in others.
Take the case of Walmart in Texas, for example. At the time of this article’s writing, BuildCentral was tracking 22 planned or ongoing Walmart projects that had been added or updated within the last 90 days in Texas alone. That’s nearly three times more than the second-most active state for planned Walmart construction, Florida. Walmart had seven projects in planning in Dallas alone.
As for Target, we’ve already written about their taste for backfill projects, and that trend doesn’t seem to be going anywhere.
Notable Planned Walmart Construction Projects
This map displays over $250 million in the Walmart planned construction pipeline. (Purple: Under Construction; Yellow: In Planning)
All planned Walmart and Target projects below are listed in order according to estimated project value. Each project was added or updated within the last 90 days, as of 1.25.21. As mentioned earlier, the majority of these planned Walmart projects at the moment are renovations, but we’ve included a mix of new and renovation projects for each retailer.
